God!! The good times. Most of you won’t understand, but for those of you who get it, then you were probably part of my ALDO Club generation (90s) back in Dakar. Back then, we thought we were on top of the world… Now, school, jobs and responsabilities have gotten the best of us.
For those who want to be in the loop, Aldo club was THE place to be on saturday nite in Dakar (the previous generations went to Metro… and though some of us have been a few times feeling like grown ups amongst the other real grown ups, our era was Aldo). When came time to go back to school on monday and you hadn’t been there…then U missed big time… Ohhhh.. High School…we couldnt wait to get out of there. I Graduated high school (Jeanne Darc, les vaches bleu pour les intimes) in 2000…and I’ve been missing it eversince…
Here are some of the fly songs we used to dance on. My people will recognize…
This one… My squad stays on point like dat dat dat dat dadat its the joint!
Oooooh and that one…
AND THIS…WAS probably THE ANTHEM
Go ahead if u know em…

Ok, je continue sur ma lancee coz les commentaires de Mr Aw et Natty m’ont inspire. I remember “I’ve been thinking about you”. That was before my time in a club though, so I only remember it from CDs or the radio. J’avais 9 ans en ‘91
My cousins and I used to throw “boums” when we were younger, too young to start clubbing. Then came time for Aldo, at the time Metro was history. Then we upgraded for Broadway (which is now le Cenat). Eduardo used to DJ those. Natty, I remember the DJ Maktar ’s (RIP) nights at Aldo. Maaaaaaaan! I’d pay so much money to go back to that time! We just went wild with anything he did. I remember at that time he had surpassed his mentor (Eduardo) who didn’t like it one bit. Then it all went downhill after that. There was Dolce for a minute. But hey, at that time, it wasn’t really the golden days anymore. Maybe it’s just because our time had passed, whicih I kinda refuse to believe. Any Naughty by Nature drove the club to a frenzy!
And then, there was the greatest of em all: CoCo Jean! Remember Nostalgie and Jukebox International, et les dedicaces le dimanche soir! Jukebox was from like 6 to 9. remember also how he used to talk during the songs to keep us from recording it. Shoot, I didn’t care. I had tapes and tapes of Jukebox mixes. I found one in my bedroom when I went back to Dakar last Xmas. I almost went crazy!
Ok, to this day, when I hear some songs, they were so typical of Jukebox, I can’t help but reminisce. These 3 especially:
Chaka Demus & Pliers’ TEASE ME:
Fugees’ READY OR NOT: (actually the whole SCORE Album, but this one in particular:
Tupac’s HAIL MARY from the Makavelli Album:
AND, my personal favorite from that era, check out Ginuwine’s HOLLER from his “BACHELOR” Album, can’t get enough of it!
Yen a tellement d’autres, mais it would take forever to post: The ones that almost made the list:
Adina Howard’s FREAKING, Aliyaah’s BACK & FORTH, TLC’s CREEP, Puff Daddy’s MISSING YOU, Usher’s MY WAY, Toni Braxton’s UNBREAK MY EART, Junior Mafia’s GET MONEY, Lost Boyz’s RENEE, Will Smith’s GETTING JIGGY, Monica & Brandi’s THE BOY IS MINE, Warren G’s REGULATE… bon, je ma’rrete la… la liste est trop longue!
I dunno, sometimes I listen to today’s music, and feel like it’s such a waste. Gosh, I’m starting to sound like my parents, or even worst, my older sister’s generation. Bit it’s true. They’re just trying too hard these days man! That’s why we all love us some Soirees retros! On se fait vieux I guess, but que de bons souvenirs!

Hello Marina! (sounds like one of my nicknames)
I feel you on the locking up to listen Jukebox, only I couldn’t even pretend coz the music was blasting outside the room.
Thank god for CoCoJean coz i dunno how we did it before he came on board. And he just had the sexiest voice ever…
Since u were a little behind me, you’re probably from the generation that made me stop going to Aldo… But just like every generation, there’s a point in time you when you have to stop hanging out at certain clubs, and that usually is when you see your little sisters or cousins run the club and get shout outs from the DJ. My older ister complained the same way when I started going out, that she couldnt stand our little gang coz on etait trop “sopp”. A couple of years later, it was my turn to tell my cousins the exact same thing…
Hummm… good memories though…
Bisoos,
M.
