Below link to Nicolas Sarkozy’s adress to US Congress yestreday. Im not sure whether Im just obsessed with the guy…or it’s because he’s all over the place. Anyhow, he was interrupted by multiple standing ovations during his speech. I can only imagine how thrilled he was at the sight of US congressmen rising to applaud him. He is probably one of the most ambitious ploticians in recent times, and his love for America and American ways make it even sweeter for him to have received this kind of recognition. Every article I have read out there underlines the fact that he not only vowed to reconquer America’s heart, but also that he criticized US policy and behavior. I don’t think crticizing a low dollar and vaguely touching on the excesses of US capitalism was much of a limp here. He played it safe, praised the US on many points and tried to find some points of contention to discuss without looking too much like Blair out there. Maybe if he had touched on US Foreign Policy and how double sided it is and other contentious issues, rather than global warning (like US Congress really cares about Global Warning, theyre probably all mad at Gore for making it such a popular issue…). But hey… re-establishing good relations with the US can’t be that bad(especially given Sarkozy’s facination with the US).

It’s just ironic that 6 months ago, France was branded America’s oldest enemy, but nowadays, it’s Europe’s best american allie. Just making sure the US doesn’t just get a free ticket because Mr. Sarkozy is in love with the “American Dream”.
